Passengers are being warned about a Facebook scam offering “free public transport in Glasgow”

The post on Facebook is from Glasgow Public Transport Card and is a fake account pretending to be from genuine bus operators in the city.

The Glasgow Public Transport Card does not exist.

The post tries to lure people in with the promise of free travel for the cost of a £2 card.

It states: “Travel Free for six months with Tripper Card!”

The scam tells people they can get, "six months of unlimited travel across Glasgow for only £2” and a fake link that people are being warned not to click on.

To make it appear genuine it has a montage of photos including a Tripper Card, Glasgow Subway a bus, and People Make Glasgow hire bikes.

Even though the Subway and bikes are not included on the real card.

The genuine Tripper ticket does exist and allows travel for cheaper rates.

Passengers are alerted to the scam with a warning on the real website.

The real tripper website is www.glasgowtripper.co.uk

It reads: “Please note that Glasgow Tripper smartcards are ONLY available to buy via this website.  We are aware of a fraudulent Facebook page - Glasgow public transport card.

“Please do not share your bank details on this page and report to Facebook.  The police and Facebook have been contacted regarding this scam.”

The genuine card is a multi-operator scheme offering travel on First Bus, McGill’s, and West Coast Motors services.

It is not free and costs from £6.35 a day to £79.50 for a four-week ticket.

A spokesperson for McGill's Buses said: "It is reprehensible that individuals are seeking to fraudulently obtain money by using the Glasgow Tripper brand. The matter has been reported to both Police Scotland and Facebook.

"We would reiterate the advice on the Tripper website that tickets can only be purchased via official apps or through the glasgowtripper.co.uk website for the Glasgow Tripper smartcard."

First Glasgow was approached for comment.
