The news of Liam Payne's death has shocked and devastated an entire movement of music fans.

The 31-year-old died on Wednesday, October 16 after falling from a balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he had been visiting to watch his former bandmate Niall Horan in concert.

Liam rose to fame as one-fifth of X Factor boyband One Direction, and his passing will undoubtedly leave millions of people lost for words, whether they were devoted fans or not.

Two of the most memorable One Direction concerts took place in Glasgow, but both in strikingly different eras for the band.

Here we remember Liam Payne and One Direction in Glasgow over the years.

One Direction’s love for Glasgow began on Sauchiehall Street in 2010. The five-piece boyband had just finished in third place in the X Factor, but the success and popularity that was to come would catapult them into being one of the show’s most famous acts of all time.

Looking back, it was a small-scale concert when you think about the thousands of screaming fans they have since performed to. As Harry Styles said at the time, it was ‘tiny’ – but it was ‘great’.

The What Makes You Beautiful crooners adored the iconic club for its electric atmosphere – and Liam particularly enjoyed the freebies.

Reflecting on the concert with the boys many years later, he said: “Do you remember at the start when we used to get free stuff, and we used to take everything.

"You’d think ‘this stuff is free’. I’ve actually got stuff in my garage, old stuff and stage outfits like this.”

Harry added: “They had hoodies and hats and stuff and we were absolutely buzzing cause it was the first free stuff we got. I was like I’m going to wear this Garage shirt every single day for the rest of my life - and we did for a bit.”

The lads happily posed for photos with their new Garage gear as if they were a bunch of regular guys on a night out.

Campus and The Garage wouldn’t be able to contain the burgeoning swarm of Directioners, so the band graduated to a headline slot at the Radio 1 Big Weekend in May 2014. They sang for a crowd of around 50,000 alongside big names like Katy Perry, Coldplay and Paolo Nutini.

Losing one-fifth of the group didn’t detract from the talent and enthusiasm One Direction had for Glasgow crowds – nor how they felt about them, as the show was completely sold out.

Liam said at the time: “We are excited to be back.”
