Superstar indie rockers The Libertines performed in a tiny city centre venue this afternoon, ahead of their two sold out Barrowland shows.
Songwriting duo Pete Doherty and Carl Barât played a stripped down 45 minute set at Assai Records on Sauchiehall Street, treating a small group of spellbound fans to an intimate performance of their best known hits.
Famous for songs such as Don’t Look Back into the Sun and Can’t Stand Me Now, the band are currently on tour after reuniting this year and releasing a fourth album, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade.
The London rockers were one of the most successful indie rock bands of the early noughties, with their eponymous second album The Libertines topping the charts in 2004.
But they often made headlines for the wrong reasons, with the their substance abuse and tumultuous interpersonal relationships frequently attracting media attention.
Doherty opened the set with a solo performance of Albion, joking that he and Barât had argued about whether to play the song, so he’d just decided to sing it alone.
Although the two of them have had a number of public fallouts over the years, they seemed to have put their differences behind them as they sung in unison on the small Assai stage.
They even slipped from an impromtu rendition of Tell the King into a well spirited verse of Puff the Magic Dragon, right before finishing off with Don't Look Back.
A long queue had earlier formed outside the store in anticipation of the performance, with a number of passionate fans hanging around afterwards hopinh to snap a selfie.
A member of the touring entourage initially seemed to extinguish such hopes, explaining to the crowd that the duo would have to go straight into the van and head off.
However, the lingering fans were rewarded for their patience, with Doherty and Barât only too happy to pose for pics and sign a few autographs.
The Libertines will perform at The Barrowland Ballroom on October 17 and 18. Both shows are sold out.
