MEN in the poorest areas of Glasgow are expected to die 15 years earlier than those in the most affluent parts of Scotland.

They have the second lowest life expectancy in the country.

The latest analysis shows males at birth in the 20% most deprived areas can expect to live for just 67.8 years.

In the better-off areas of the city, it increases to 80.5 years  gap of more than 12 years

Both are well short of the overall Scottish average and even further from the most affluent communities in the council areas with the highest expectancy.

Women live longer but the gap between Glasgow and Scotland and rich and poor is also stark.

In Glasgow, a female born in the 20% most deprived communities can expect to live until the age of 74.4, while in the most affluent they can expect another nine years before they die.

Areas in Glasgow that have anong the highest deprivation score in Scotland include Carntyne and Haghill which is number 2 in Scotland, North Barlanark and Easterhouse South at number 5 and Possilpark which is 14th most deprived.

These areas have the lowest life expectancy where men can expect just under 68 years and women 74.

The areas in the city where people can expect to live the longest include Broomhill, Kelvingrove and Kelvindale in the west and Newlands in the south which are in the top 10% least deprived in Scotland.

The gap between rich and poor is highlighted by some of Glasgow’s wealthier neighbours recording much higher rates.

East Renfrewshire, which includes Newton Mearns and Giffnock, has the highest for women where they can expect to live until they are 84 and men until they are 80. The wealthiest in those areas can live for another two years more.

In East Dunbartonshire, including Bearsden and Milngavie, women have a life expectancy of 83.4 and men 79.9.

In the most well-off areas in East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire, men can expect a life until the age of 82.6 and women until 87 and 86 respectively.

Life expectancy in Glasgow has dropped in recent years.

In 2016-2018 the average was 73.3 for a male and 78.5 for a female.

Now it is 76.3 for males and 78.3 for females.

National Records of Scotland, Statistician Phillipa Haxton said: “Life expectancy in Scotland peaked in 2012-2014 and plateaued until 2017-2019. Thereafter there was a fall.

“Today’s figures are still below the peak of 10 to 12 years ago.”
