Three schools in Glasgow had to breach capacity numbers this year to cope with the number of local pupils who wanted to go there.
Smithycroft Secondary had to increase spaces from 180 to 200 so kids from the catchment got an S1 place in August after demand exceeded the number of spaces available.
Riverbank and Wallacewell Primary schools also had to take in pupils above an agreed cap for the start of the new education year.
It is understood housebuilding in the Robroyston area is impacting demand for Smithycroft Secondary and Wallacewell Primary.
The council can approve an increase in capacity as long as it doesn’t impact the future year pupil intake according to a council paper.
Initially, the number of catchment enrolments in the city also exceeded availability at Glendale Gaelic, Glasgow Gaelic Primary and Calton Gaelic schools.

But pupils were eventually placed at alternative Gaelic schools or a non-Gaelic school in their area.
The council’s education convenor Christina Cannon presented a paper on what next year’s capping limits will be for primaries and secondaries in Glasgow at today’s city administration committee.
SNP councillor Cannon said: “Effectively managing the capacity in our schools is important for several reasons but ultimately to ensure the learning experience of the children within the school is suitable for them and takes into account the range of needs in the curriculum and ensures catchment children are prioritised within catchment schools.”
There were 5724 P1 enrolments in August and 5825 children starting high school.
Glasgow City Council also received 3792 placing requests with most granted giving 2282 children a place at their preferred school.
Councillors approved the P1 and S1 numbers for next year at the city administration committee today.
A council paper said: “At an operational level the council is required to plan for the sufficiency of primary and secondary school places across the city on a rolling annual basis with priority given to children and young people residing within the defined catchment areas.
"Having ensured that catchment area needs can be met, then placing requests are approved in line with legislation and the council’s placing request priority criteria.”
