A man who tried to steal bottles of Buckfast took on the Clydebank shopkeeper who tried to stop him.

Ryan Hamilton, 23, appeared from custody for sentencing having previously admitted to assaulting and struggling with the man.

He also admitted stealing alcohol while acting with another person, and having an offensive weapon - a glass bottle.

Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard how around 10am on April 10, 2022, Hamilton and another person walked in, hoods up and wearing face masks.

They made their way to the alcohol section of the Usave store on Faifley Road and picked up two bottles of Buckfast.

The shopkeeper approached both and the would-be thief became aggressive.

He started to brandish one of the bottles towards the man, who then started to shut the shop shutters, suspecting they were planning to steal the bottles.

Fiscal depute Euan Nicholson said: "An altercation took place. The complainer was assaulted - pushing him numerous times."

The shutters were eventually brought up and the two men made off with the alcohol. It was all on CCTV.

A neighbour contacted police and Hamilton was later arrested.

Hamilton, previously of Seamore Street, and later of Raglan Street, both Maryhill, was said to link almost all of his past crimes to abuse of substances or alcohol.

At sentencing on October 15, his defence solicitor said: "He has never been able to consume alcohol responsibly. He was drinking heavily and taking large quantities of drugs.

"He began to experience alcohol withdrawals and took the decision to steal alcohol from this store.

"He was confronted by the shop owner, attempting to thwart this theft.

"He accepts full responsibility. He apologises."

The solicitor added that his client recognised the experience would be traumatising for the shopkeeper. And he knew he needed to "break the cycle of offending".

Sheriff Seith Ireland said: "You have a significant record for one so young and a lack of maturity still. This was a theft, while you were on bail, assaulting the shopkeeper trying to defend his shop.

"There is a great deal of concern in the community about instances of violence offered to people in the course of their employment.

"There is no alternative to custody."

Hamilton was locked up for a total of 135 days.
