Fed-up residents are at the end of their tether over the loud noise caused by a broken manhole cover on a busy Elderslie road.

Frustration is mounting over the constant “clunk” sound created as vehicles drive over the loose hatch in Main Road.

People in the area have tried for months to get the fault fixed – and said they were told this would happen in August – but have ultimately been left to live with the repetitive racket.

A resident of Main Road told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “It’s so annoying. It’s just clunk, clunk, clunk every time.

“It’s hard for a car not to go over it because of its position but it’s really frustrating for the residents.”

The exasperated group enlisted the help of Councillor Iain McMillan, a Labour representative for the village, who determined the manhole cover is the responsibility of Virgin Media.

He explained: “Both myself and council officers have been on to Virgin for the last few months to try and get it fixed.

“Virgin promise you the earth. It’s hard to speak to anybody, it’s all this online chat.

“But I’ve been promised twice by Virgin Media that it will be treated as a matter of urgency and it will be fixed.

“I’ve now got about half a dozen people from around Main Road who have been contacting me because this thing is continuous.

“Elderslie Main Road is extremely busy, so if you’re trying to sleep, you’re on shift work or just going about your daily business in the house, it’s a pain in the neck.

“The people there have had enough. We don’t seem to be getting anywhere.”

However, relief could finally be on the horizon for the neighbours with the situation expected to be addressed within weeks.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “We always aim to attend sites quickly where repairs like this are required.

“In this case, our contractors were initially unable to attend the site whilst the council resurfaced the road.

“We are now awaiting permission from the council to attend the site and our contractors will repair the cover as quickly as possible.

“We apologise for any disruption caused.”

A council spokesperson added: “The manhole cover belongs to Virgin Media who plan to carry out repair works between November 18 and 20.”
