Hopes that a decaying and dilapidated historic building could be saved and turned into social housing have been dashed.

A councillor for the area, however, confirmed they are unable to take it further due to the estimated cost and the search for a potential developer goes on.

Such is the state of the building and the costs of redevelopment being high he said they are unable to consider it.

Eunis Jassemi, Labour councillor for Victoria Park, said it was disappointing news.

Nearby residents are worried about damage from the hall to the tenements beside it.

She said: "After living here for over six years, conditions have only got worse, damp in adjoining properties, rat infestations, and now a mess of weeds and debris since the railings went up last year.

“Years of council neglect have made the building unusable and pose serious concerns, especially given Glasgow’s history with fires.

“Immediate action is needed to clean up, but we also need a plan for the long-term future of this site."

The Labour councillor said thanks Whiteinch and Scotstoun HA for exploring the possibility of housing on the site.

Jassemi said: "I’m saddened that Whiteinch & Scotstoun Housing Association will not be able to develop the Whiteinch Burgh Hall site due to the current economic climate.

''The state of Whiteinch Burgh Hall has been a long-standing concern for residents, and I’m fully committed to its restoration and securing its future as a valuable space for the people of Whiteinch.

''When I launched my campaign to save Whiteinch Burgh Hall, I promised to explore every avenue for a solution, and my commitment remains unchanged. I will keep working towards a long-term outcome that benefits the community.”

The councillor said housing is still a preferred option for the transformation of the building.

He added: ''There is clear demand for housing in Whiteinch. With new independent businesses thriving and Victoria Park nearby, the area is increasingly desirable, making it an ideal spot for future housing.

''I’ve already engaged with housing associations and various stakeholders and will be meeting with interested parties in the coming days to ensure any solution meets local needs and delivers long-term value.”

He added he would be meeting with City Property to discuss a way forward and said he would be asking for it to be maintained to ensure it is safe for the community in the meantime.
