Glasgow City Council is set to receive £1m from the Scottish Government’s Road Safety Improvement Fund as part of a national effort to reduce road casualties.
A total of £10m will be allocated through the fund, split amongst Scotland’s 32 local authorities, with the aim of “lowering risks and reducing casualties on local roads.”
An additional £4 million will fund initiatives to protect pedestrians and cyclists across Scotland through the roll out of 20mph speed limits. A 20mph Implementation Guide has been made available to local authorities.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said: “Road safety is a top priority for the Scottish Government.
“This £14 million investment underlines our commitment to helping our road safety partners implement schemes that protect the public.
“The release of our 20mph Implementation Guide will help local authorities introduce lower speed limits consistently across Scotland, creating safer streets for everyone.
“Our goal of making Scotland’s roads the safest in the world by 2030 is unwavering. I am resolute in my determination to save lives and ensure a safer Scotland for all.”
The funding comes amidst a considerable number of tragic road incidents in Glasgow in recent years, with 14 people being killed by collisions in the city during 2023, and over 200 others being seriously injured.
One such tragic loss was that of old Emma Burke Newman, who was hit by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) on January 27, 2023 on Broomielaw. The 22-year-old was cycling to Glasgow School of Art, where she studied architecture. Driver Paul Mowat, 69, later pleaded guilty to causing Emma’s death by careless driving.
On February 2, 2023, 33-year-old Glasgow Caledonian University student Chinenye Vera Okonkwo sadly died following a crash involving two cars on St Vincent Street.
Less than an hour later, a 64-year-old woman was also struck by a car just metres away from where Chinenye was killed. The woman passed away on March 1.
David Gow, 79, died after being struck by an off-road bike on February 12, 2023, on Balmore Road in north Glasgow. Two individuals, aged 23 and 24, were later arrested and charged in connection.
On April 4, 2023, five-year-old Ayan Khan Nooreen died after being hit by a bus on Calder Street in the Southside.
13-year-old Artian Lushaku died on May 14, four days after being hit by a car on Balmore Road - the same road David Gow passed away on.
