As someone who doesn’t drink tea and is only just dabbling in the world of coffee, the arrival of hot chocolate season (also known as winter) always excites me.
Flip that on its head and nothing is more disappointing than a hot chocolate that isn’t, well, chocolatey enough.
So, when I saw a TikTok user sharing a recipe for a hot chocolate made in a slow cooker, I was a little sceptical.
I decided to try to make my own slow cooker hot chocolate to see if I could improve my usual method of making the hot drink at home (using the usual shop-bought powder mixes).

I tried making a slow cooker hot chocolate
There are plenty of videos online with lots of people giving the recipe a try but I decided to follow @tamingtwins’ version.
Ingredients:
- 30g cocoa powder
- 1 litre whole milk
- 200g milk chocolate
- 300ml single cream
- 2tsp vanilla extract
- Marshmallows (optional)
- Chocolate sprinkles (optional)
Most of the ingredients I used were the same as the recipe. Although, I used semi-skimmed milk by accident but it still tasted amazing.
I opted for Cadbury’s Bourneville cocoa powder, which I think might have added to the chocolatey goodness.
The actual method in the video could’ve been more detailed but I managed to follow it easily enough. In fairness, the caption does say to find more information on the website but I only saw that now (oops!).
In the video, there are some chocolate sprinkles added alongside marshmallows in the slow cooker. I wasn’t sure what chocolate it was so I decided to crumble part of a Cadbury flake on the top.
The recipe didn’t tell me how long to leave the hot chocolate in the slow cooker but after a quick glance at other similar recipes, I left it for two hours on low.
While two hours seemed like a long time, the hot chocolate really wasn’t warm enough. As I was a bit impatient by this point, I decided to transfer it into mugs and microwaved them for a minute – this made them very hot!
I then added some cream and more marshmallows and the remaining Cadbury flake plus some chocolate sprinkles.

Overall, the hot chocolate was rich with lots of flavour so it was definitely one that I needed to sip instead of gulp. I’d go as far as saying, it was similar to one you’d find in a coffee shop so now I feel like I’m my own at-home barista.
Half of the recipe made three hot chocolates and then I saved the other half and I think I’ll probably make another three with the rest which is very generous.
It’s a good idea if you know you’ll be wanting a hot chocolate in the near future as you can go about your day and let the chocolate melt and the ingredients combine. I’d recommend stirring the mixture occasionally to help it mix together.
Since making this hot chocolate, it’s all I’ve been thinking about. I know I’ll be making it again in the future.
