The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service Santa Dash is back for 2024 with a “bigger and better” event for the whole family, with all proceeds going to The Fire Fighters Charity.

Following a successful first year in 2023, the Santa Dash returns on December 1 at the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) National Training Centre in Cambuslang.

Besides the dashing of the Santas, people will be able to enjoy Christmas markets, face painting, a Santa’s Grotto and even a giant inflatable helter skelter. A DJ will be on hand to provide some musical entertainment, and there will be a very special choral performance by the kids of St Vincent’s Primary in Thornliebank.

“We’re trying to create a festive family fun event,” he said. “It’s open to fire service personnel and their families, current and retired, but it’s also open to the public. It’s a great opportunity to come along and see the training centre, which is an amazing facility.

“The route of the Santa Dash will go all around the facility, so it’ll give you a great view inside the place for people who don’t normally get the chance to come in. It’s not a site where people normally get the opportunity to take a look at.

“There will be some fire engines there for people to interact with as well. So it’s a chance for the public to come along and see the facility, whilst also getting behind and supporting their local firefighters at the same time.”

Tickets for the event cost £10, with under 16s going free. All proceeds raised from the event will go to The Fire Fighters charity, who support fire service personnel through the unique challenges that come with the job.

Lyndsay Campbell, a regional fundraiser for the charity, elaborated on the the work they do.

“We provide support, whether that’s mental or physical, to firefighters and their families,” she said.

“The nature of their role means they do encounter some circumstances that most people would never experience in their whole lives. They can come across some quite traumatic incidents, and sometimes they can carry that trauma with them for many years.

“So it’s our job to support them through that in whatever way they need. And we’re finding that more and more firefighters are opening up about these things, which is great.”

Both the event and the 5km are open to all, with no element of competition. There will be a raffle with lots of great prizes, as well as 200 cakes provided by the local Greggs branch.

The kids 1km starts at 10.30am, with the 5km dash taking place at 11am, at the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) National Training Centre in Cambuslang on December 1.
