A TEENAGER brutally attacked his stepdad on New Year's Day after a row over noise.

James Cook, then 19, pounced on Jamie Finlay at their home in Pollok on January 1, 2024.

Cook was told to be quiet after returning home from Paisley in the early hours of the morning.

However, the teen was later confronted by Mr Finlay after he heard the boy talking loudly on a phone call.

Cook lashed out at Mr Findlay by repeatedly punching him and putting his stepdad into a headlock.

The victim went on to fall against a radiator as the attack continued upon him.

Mr Finlay was left with a number of injuries which included to his ear which needed 12 stitches and could leave a permanent scar.

First offender Cook pleaded guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Finlay to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Allegations that Mr Finlay was knocked unconscious after being repeatedly struck by a mobile phone were deleted by the Crown.

The court heard that Cook told Mr and Mrs Finlay that he planned to go out in Paisley with friends for New Year's Eve.

Mrs Finlay woke up to find a number of missed calls from her son.

She answered a call at 12.22am in which a drunk-sounding Cook wished her a happy new year.

He stated that he was possibly going to stay out for the night and would let them know.

Around 5.30am, Cook was dropped off home by the police after he was found shirtless in the middle of the street.

Prosecutor Lauren Sangray said: "She was happy for Cook to come in as long as he kept the noise down and went to bed."

Mr and Mrs Finlay then went to bed themselves before being woken up.

Miss Sangray said: "He was talking loudly on his phone saying 'f*** the police'.

"Mr Finlay asked him to be quiet and stop shouting."

Cook replied: "Who the f*** you talking to, you won't tell me what to do."

Mr Finlay again asked Cook to stop shouting and "keep it down."

Miss Sangray said: "Cook ran upstairs and punched Mr Finlay to the face multiple times and put him in a headlock multiple times.

"While restraining him, Mr Finlay fell to the ground backwards and Cook fell on top of him then punched him to the face."

Mrs Finlay intervened and pulled her son off of her husband.

Police arrived and Cook told the officers: "Aye, I did hit him."

Mr Finlay was taken by ambulance to hospital meantime where he was treated for injuries to his head, ear and nose.

The victim received 12 stitches for his ear injury which Miss Sangray stated could leave "permanent scarring."

Garvey McArdle, defending, told the court that Mr Finlay fell against a radiator during the attack.

The lawyer added: "He has grown up due to the experience.

"My client works full time and things are hopeful and not as bleak as they make out."

Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Louise Arrol KC who granted Cook bail meantime.

The sheriff stated: "This is a very serious matter."
