A new festive bin collection schedule is being put in place to try to prevent a backlog in January.

Bin crews will focus on tenement and flatted properties because in previous years there has been a big build-up of waste in many back courts.

Some main door homes with kerbside collections will miss a collection if it falls on one of the public holidays to allow the workers to target flats.

The council said cleansing staff will empty recycling bins for flats before Christmas to free up capacity for extra waste generated over the festive period.

Staff will also be working on Boxing Day and January 2 to target domestic waste bins stored on the street, multi-storey flats and households with vulnerable people or that generate large amounts of medical waste.

Extra resources will also be put in place to empty street bins in high footfall areas like the city centre and Byres Road on Boxing Day.

Around two-thirds of homes in Glasgow are flats with houses or bungalows making up around one-third of the housing stock.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: "We know that stopping bin collection services over the Christmas and New Year period can cause a lot of disruption for affected residents, especially those living in flats and tenements.

"We are aiming to minimise the overall impact felt by the loss of service by this year by focusing additional effort on back courts and public sites, where excess waste can build-up quickly and cause environmental problems.

"To support this approach we are asking residents who are scheduled to receive a kerbside collection on any of the public holidays to wait until their next scheduled dates before putting their bins on the pavement for collection.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause for those affected, but residents can be assured any excess or build-up of waste will be removed on their next collection day. We hope these residents will make full use of their recycling bins and compact their waste as far as possible to make the most of their available bin capacity.

"Opening for our public waste centres will be also extended to help residents manage any build-up of waste over the holiday period."

Residents in houses with a kerbside collection due to present any bin for collection on December 25 or 26 or January 1 or 2 are advised these collections will not take place.

Instead, they are being asked to present those bins on the next collection day for that bin.

Information on how to recycle effectively is available on the council's website at https://glasgow.gov.uk/article/4486/Residents-Bins

Residents are being sent leaflets to explain the changes.
