A driver caused a woman to suffer a collapsed lung after crashing into her partner's car.

Miran Ahmed, 20, smashed into Andrew Downie's vehicle in Glasgow's Gallowgate on Christmas Day last year.

Both vehicles spun during the horror collision which also saw another car driving on the road damaged.

Ahmed, of the city's Scotstoun, fled the scene claiming that he could not speak English before he was traced by police to a restaurant.

Mr Downie's stricken passenger Arlene Courtney meantime was taken to hospital for a string of serious injuries to her lungs, ribs and liver.

Ahmed pled guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He also admitted driving while holding an expired provisional licence, without insurance and possession of a knife.

The court heard that Ahmed's BMW 3 Series failed to stop for a red light and struck Mr Downie's Audi VRM A1 causing significant damage to it.

Both vehicles span multiple times before they came to a stop on the pavement.

A Mercedes GLC 300 also driving on the road was also hit while Ahmed's vehicle was coming to a stop.

Ahmed spoke with the driver of that vehicle and told him that he "could not speak English" before he fled the scene.

Emergency services were contacted and Mr Downie's partner Miss Courtney was taken to hospital where she stayed for a week.

Prosecutor Lauren Aitchison said: "She received treatment for a bruised liver, broken ribs, a broken scapula, a bruised lung and a collapsed lung."

The victim was also found to have sustained a small wound to her eyelid as well as bruising to her eye.

She underwent a chest drain in her right lung and was admitted to a trauma unit.

Ahmed was traced meantime to Shawarma Grill in Glasgow's Paisley Road West.

Around three weeks later, police attention was drawn to a vehicle driven to Shawarma Grill by Ahmed.

Officers approached Ahmed who was "trembling and visibly nervous."

He stated that it was not his vehicle and that he was not the driver.

A search of the car recovered a black Stanley knife from the centre console.

Ahmed was also found to not have a valid licence or insurance and only held an expired provisional licence.

Lara Thomson, defending, told the court that her client will not drive again.

Sentence was deferred pending background reports by Sheriff Daniel Kelly who disqualified Ahmed from driving and granted him bail meantime.
