VANDALS plaguing a busy South Side street have been slammed for their “vile” graffiti.

Following Saturday’s celebrations surrounding the Ibrox stadium, Glasgow City Council crews have been called out to tackle numerous reports of vandalism throughout Paisley Road West.

However, it’s been warned teams attempting to tackle the issue are “firefighting” with “constant” graffiti cropping up just hours after being cleared.

The graffiti includes messages such as “55” and “f*** Celtic”.

Other messages include “can you see us now,” “no IRA” and lampposts painted red, white and blue.

At the weekend, a wall belonging to Boots Pharmacy on Forfar Avenue, just off the main road, was targeted with speech relating to Palestine, which was then promptly covered up by charity Refuweegee.

The graffiti was transformed with an anti-racist message and rainbow, however, it’s understood work is underway to return the wall to its former state.

Councillor Jim Kavanagh, who represents the area, has also pitched in to clear the area - spending more than five hours painting over the work of the vandals.

He said: “I started near Sandwood Road and spent about five-and-a-half hours on Sunday painting over some graffiti.

“I’ve got to congratulate the people doing the graffiti removal.

“They did a great job, although they’re firefighting just now. “

He added: “It’s a lot of sectarian, vile messaging being spread out.”

Residents have been urged to contact the council if any graffiti of any kind is spotted in the area.

However, locals fear workers will be “snowed under” given the amount spotted across Cardonald and the surrounding areas this week.

A spokeswoman for the local authority said staff are working to remove the vandalism as quickly as possible.

She said: “We’ve received a number of offensive graffiti reports across the city and a great many of them have been dealt with.

“We are using all resources available and staff always do their best to have racist and sectarian graffiti removed within 48hours of it being reported.

Glasgow Times:

“Around 160metres of this type of graffiti has been removed from Paisley Road West.”

She added: “However, some of the reports are on privately-owned sites and responsibility for clearing-up those rests with the property owners, not the council.

“We rely on the public and encourage residents to report issues to us appropriately so that we can respond as effectively as possible.”
