Good Morning Britain viewers are set for a new face on their screens as a new presenter makes his debut. 

The award-winning broadcaster Gordon Smart is set to join Charlotte Hawkins on Thursday and Friday, December 29 and 30. 

The Scots journalist and editor, 42, becomes the latest name to join ITV's rolling lineup for the morning news programme. 

Smart will appear alongside the broadcaster's other big names including Kate Garraway, Ben Shephard, Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley

Who is Gordon Smart on Good Morning Britain?

Although this marks Smart's debut on Good Morning Britain, viewers may recognise the former newspaper journalist from elsewhere.

The new face also presenters for BBC Radio Scotland, Radio X, BBC Radio 5 Live.

Additionally, Smart co-hosts the podcast Restless Natives with another famous face - Line of Duty actor Martin Compston.

In a tweet announcing the news on Tuesday, Smart wrote: Looking forward to making my debut hosting @gmb this Thursday and Friday with @CharlotteHawkns @itv."

The presenter continued by joking: "Told my dad about the new gig and he said “better get a spray tan, son.” Good.

Concluding the statement, he added: "See you bright and early at 6am, 29th and 30th December. Good Morning Britain!"

Before moving into broadcasting, Smart was the youngest editor of The Sun’s Bizarre Showbiz column, aged 26.

He was voted Showbiz Reporter of The Year in 2012 and has worked as the editor of The Scottish Sun.

Later, he became Deputy Editor of the National Edition.

Viewers have rushed to Smart's comments to congratulate the new presenter.

Co-host and actor Martin Compston teased on Instagram: "What will last longer those Christmas trees or Gordon?? Love it pal lookin the part."

Former professional footballer and coach John Terry posted: "Congratulations and good luck @gordonsmart."

Love Island narrator and fellow Scot Iain Stirling chimed in:" GET IN THERE BIG YIN!!!!!"

Meanwhile, his new co-host Charlotte Hawkins commented:" Looking forward to it - see you then!"
