An outdoor seating area at a Shawlands steakhouse will be extended despite concerns from local residents that it would add to parking problems.

An application for 72 chairs and 23 tables with a mixture of two seater and four seater tables along Pollokshaws Road and Titwood Road was presented to Glasgow City Council’s planning committee yesterday.

Members were informed that there had been nine objections received, seven of which were from neighbouring residents, one from The Strathbungo Society and one from Shawlands and Strathbungo Community Council.

They had raised concerns that the site was not within the town centre, the proposals would lead to additional noise and disturbance and the outdoor seating would exacerbate existing issues with car parking and illegally parked vehicles in the area.

Speaking about the application, council officer, Paul O’Brien, said: “The application is up in front of you today because it has received nine objections in total. Seven of these are from local residents and the other two are from amenity groups – the Strathbungo Society and the Shawlands and Strathbungo Community Council.

“In addition there have been two objections from local councillors. One from Baillie McLeod and the other from councillor Raja. The point of objections are that it is not located within a town centre, increased noise and the potential for the outside use to be a pub.  “Residents also believe that the outdoor seating area could be used for music performances.”

The proposal will also see the installation of a canopy, formation of a bin store and removal of some car parking spaces.

Questions were also raised about the ownership of the land.  Labour councillor Jane Morgan said: “The paper refers to tables being placed on the footway but do I take it that land of all those new tables is actually in the ownership of the applicant?

“I was interested in what the position is here.”

It was confirmed that all the seating is located on land that is owned by the applicant and not by Glasgow City Council.  Following the discussion the proposals were agreed unanimously.
