Ahead of the event, AUOB issued the rallying cry: "On Saturday, we march for independence and rally at George Square.
"Make sure to attend this national demonstration which will empower the extra-parliamentary movement, express our defiance of Westminster rule and demand for action in the Scottish Parliament.
"Be there."
The organisation said defending the NHS was a "clear and present" reason to take part in the march, and that independence is a "national health emergency".
Those taking part were urged to bring their "flags, banners, pipes and drums".
The procession route led those taking part from the West End to the city centre via Kelvinway, Gibson Street, Eldon Street, Woodlands Road, Sauchiehall Street, Pitt Street, West George Street, Blythswood Square, West George Street, Nelson Mandela Place, West George Street and finally onto George Square.
The march was led by the Saor Alba Pipes and Drums and people started to arrive at George Square around 1.15pm, with the rally expected to last until 3.30pm.
There were several speakers taking part from groups such as the SNP, NHS for Yes and Now Scotland, and there was entertainment from a number of people including Kevin Gore, the Carlton Jug Band and The Gallowgaitors.
