Glasgow’s newly elected councillors were “blessed” at a traditional ceremony over the  weekend as they reaffirmed their commitment to serve the people of the city.

The Kirkin’ of the Council took place on Sunday, August 21 at the Glasgow Cathedral, and marked what was essentially a traditional church  blessing for the new council over the next five years.

In attendance at the service yesterday was the Lord Provost of Glasgow, councillor Jacqueline McLaren, who was joined by fellow councillors, senior officers and city representatives.

Reverend Mark Johnstone led the service and was joined by the Ayr Choral Union, conducted by Andy McTaggart.

Following the service Ms McLaren said: “The Kirkin’ of the Council is an important tradition and a significant event for Glasgow City Council. Reinforcing our elected members’ commitment to serve the people of this city. I’d like to thank Rev. Johnstone for a very special service.”

Conservative group leader, councillor Thomas Kerr, said that it was important for every councillor to remember their duty to the people of Glasgow.

He added: “It was wonderful to attend the Kirkin’ of the new Council on Sunday alongside fellow elected members.

“In a time when politics can seem angry and divisive, seeing people from across the political spectrum come together to celebrate the new council term was very heartening and reminds us all of the duty we have going forward for the next five years to serve our communities and the people of Glasgow.

“I was especially happy to have both my Gran and Granda in attendance with me at the service who saw their grandson proudly sit alongside the Lord Provost as a Bailie of the city of Glasgow. When I grew up in Cranhill, the idea of that being a possibility seemed just a fantasy.”

The service was broadcast live and is available to view on www.glasgowcathedral.org
