UPDATE: Glasgow Loves Christmas issue update as market organisers say they won't return

The Glasgow Christmas Market organisers have said that they will not return to the city for this year's festive season.

In a social media post today the Glasgow Christmas Market, operated by Market Place Europe, said: "ANNOUNCEMENT - We will not be organising Glasgow Christmas Market 2022.

"For information on other festivities in Glasgow this year then please contact Glasgow City Council directly."

There has been no further information given as to why the firm will not be involved in this year's celebrations which usually take place at both George Square and the St Enoch Centre.

Last year, only the St Enoch Centre market was opened with Market Place Europe stating: "The Glasgow Loves Christmas team explored every option with ourselves to make George Square market possible this Christmas.

"Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to create a mutually agreeable plan for this venue."

Comments have already started flooding in from upset members of the public after today's post with one saying: "Sorry but an announcement isn’t good enough. How many times has this been cancelled?

"We need a reason and explanation why.

"It’s going to get to the stage that when the Glasgow Christmas market does open back up, people just won’t go!"

Another added: "The market isn't just about going and spending money. Kids love the lights and the atmosphere.

"Surely something else could be put in place to help this?"

It is not yet clear whether today's announcement means no Christmas market will take place in Glasgow or if the event will be handled by a new organiser.

Glasgow City Council and Market Place Europe have been contacted for comment.
