A STATUE of Celtic great Billy McNeill is to be unveiled in his hometown. 

Members of the Billy McNeill Commemoration Committee revealed plans for a sculpture in honour of the late Lisbon Lion at Bellshill Cross.

The announcement was made by the group chairman Eddie Lynas at a race night event on Saturday, September 24.

Later, the group shared the news on their Facebook page that the statue will be unveiled on November 26.

A post read: "After a long wait, we're delighted to announce that the unveiling day will be Saturday 26th of November at Bellshill Cross.

"Big thanks to Liz McNeill and family for giving up their time to help us tonight, we very much look forward to seeing you on this day for this momentous occasion."

The group had visited the sculptor's studio alongside Billy's widow Liz to finalise plans for the statue and give the seal of approval before it is revealed to the public.

Billy's association with the Hoops as a player, manager and club ambassador spanned 60 years, and he captained the legendary squad of Libson Lions who won the European Cup in the Portuguese capital in 1967.
