A Glasgow student who has been blind since birth has won the Keyboard Final of the BBC Young Musician competition for 2022.

Talented Ethan Lock currently studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and is originally from Dennyloanhead in the Falkirk area.

Although a genetic condition has left him without sight, the 17-year-old has said that an attraction to sounds 'from the whirring of a washing machine to an engine starting' from an early age has allowed him to develop a passion for music.

An expert panel judging the Keyboard Final, which was recorded in early July at Saffron Hall in Essex, included pianist and composer Tom Poster and pianist and BBC Young Musician 1992 finalist Daniel Tong.

Highlights of the performances from four other young musicians were shown on BBC four this evening before Ethan was revealed as winner.

He has now progressed through to the Grand Final of the prestigious Young Musician competition which will be broadcast BBC Four and BBC Radio 3 on Sunday, October 9.

Ethan is the fifth and last competitor to secure a spot in the final alongside viola player Jaren Ziegler, flautist Sofía Patterson-Gutiérrez, trumpeter Sasha Canter, and percussionist Jordan Ashman.

Each finalist will perform a concerto with the world-renowned BBC Philharmonic in front of a formidable panel of industry experts.
