A community group is pushing forward with plans for a new allotment following a donation from a Scottish home-building company.

The Garthamlock and Craigend Allotments Association, which was established in August to provide an urban space for people to grow flowers, fruits, and vegetables, has received £1,000 from Persimmon West Scotland to build an allotment in the area.

The proposed allotment site will sit alongside the current community garden as well as additional land that is currently unused.

The site will also serve as an educational resource for local community groups, schools and nurseries to show where food comes from and how it can be grown sustainably.

Jillian Reilly, Garthamlock and Craigend Allotments Association chairperson, said: “We are thankful to Persimmon West Scotland for providing Garthamlock and Craigend Allotments Association with much-needed funding and for supporting our vision.

“This generous donation will help create a much-desired outdoor space within the local area to encourage the pursuit of gardening as a healthy recreation, support sustainability and improve the health and wellbeing of many.”

The funding is being delivered through Persimmon’s Community Champions programme, which sees up to £64,000 donated to good causes across the UK every month.

The money provided by the programme will be used for fencing, soil, seeds, and plants.

Chris Logan, Persimmon West Scotland managing director, said: “Persimmon West Scotland is based in Garthamlock and in the last few years we’ve built over 900 homes here. We’re committed to continuing to support a thriving and successful community.

“The allotments association is doing a fantastic job in creating green spaces that local residents can benefit from, so I’m delighted we’re able to back their new project and look forward to seeing it up and running soon."
