People across the city have paid tribute to Archbishop Mario Conti.

As the Glasgow Times reported at the time, his death was announced yesterday. He was 88 years old.

Dozens of followers, officials and residents have since taken to social media to say goodbye to the beloved religious leader.

Councillor Stephen Curran shared: "Thoughts and prayers for the city’s Catholic community and all faiths following the death of Archbishop Mario Conti, a familiar and friendly face to so many in this part of Glasgow."

Stephen Callaghan, creative director of the Archdiocese of Glasgow Arts Project, said: "Saddened by the death of Archbishop Mario Conti.

"16 years ago, he entrusted me to set up AGAP. Baptised my two children and became a friend after being my employer.

"Voice of pastoral care and encouragement. I'll miss him. May he rest in peace and rise in glory."

Marie McNair MSP added: "I am sorry to hear of the sad passing of Archbishop Emeritus Mario Conti. Requiescat in peace."

Many members of the public also remembered the priest.

One person said: "Scottish Catholics have lost a great man a great servant of God in Archbishop Mario Conti.

"Eternal rest grant onto him, oh Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.

"May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of god rest in peace. Amen."

Anoter comment read: "A devoted servant of God whose selfless and pastoral dedication to the Catholic communities in Glasgow was limitless. May he Requiescat in Pace."

A third resident said: "RIP. Such sad news, will light a candle on Sunday at St Teresa's Chapel. God rest you."
