A top cop has spoken out after a football scout was convicted for aiding in the smuggling of £450k of cocaine with a secret compartment in a van.

Jordan McKinlay, 30, was sentenced to three years and nine months at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday.

His accomplice, Gary O’Connell, 23, was imprisoned for four years last December for transporting the drugs from England to Scotland in a Renault Kangoo, which we previously reported had a compartment used to stash the haul.

Now Detective Chief Inspector Steven Elliot has released a statement in the hope that McKinlay's conviction serves as a warning to those involved in drug supply operations.

He said: “This was a co-ordinated effort to bring large quantities of illegal and harmful substances into Scotland.

"This sentence sends a clear message for anyone who is involved in the supply of illegal substances that this will not be tolerated in our communities.

"Jordan McKinlay will now have to deal with the consequences of his actions.

"The public continue to play a vital role in assisting our investigations and anyone with any concerns about drugs, or who has information about those involved in drugs, should contact Police Scotland on 101 or make an anonymous report to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
