GLASGOW schools will close next week due to strike action.

Letters have been sent to parents from Glasgow City Council to let them know that all primary, secondary and ASL schools will be closed on Thursday, November 24 due to industrial action by teacher unions.

Douglas Hutchison, executive director of education, has written to explain that the council has been left with no option but to close schools due to the number of teachers who will be on strike.

Standalone nurseries will remain open but nursery classes will also be closed.

Families who are eligible for free school meals will be downloaded money to cover the strike day with details being released in the next few days.

The letter issued to parents and carers from Mr Hutchison read: "You may be aware from media coverage that industrial action has been announced by several teaching unions in relation to pay awards and we have been notified of industrial action on Thursday, November 24.

"I am sorry to have to inform you that due to the number of teachers we anticipate going on strike, we will need to close all primary, secondary and ASL schools on this day.

"Given the uncertainty around which teachers will be on strike we cannot make any commitments in relation to online learning, but if this changes, the school will update you.

"There will be no impact to our standalone nurseries, but nursery classes in primary schools will also be closed.

"Our intention is to provide all families entitled to free school meals with a direct payment to their bank accounts to cover the day’s action and we will post updated information on the council’s website over the next few days.

"The payment may be added to a payment that is due in the near future, rather than as a one off for the strike day.

"I am sorry that learning is being disrupted and you will have to make alternative arrangements for childcare because of this announcement.

"I hope you will understand that we have been left with no alternative but to close our schools and we will post any updates on the Council’s normal communication channels."
