A primary school pupil in Bishopbriggs has been left "distraught" after a carol singing event was cancelled due to planned strike action.

Members of Scotland's largest teaching union, The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), are to take part in what will be the first national strike action over pay for almost 40 years in a protest on Thursday, November 24.

As a result, primary, secondary and ASL schools across Scotland will be closed.

However, one dad from Bishopbriggs, who asked to remain anonymous, says his nine-year-old daughter has been left disappointed at the news that her Christmas carol singing opportunity in Bishopbriggs town centre, which was due to take place on Thursday, will also not go ahead.

The event was scheduled for 4pm, outside of school hours, but a spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council confirmed that extra-curricular activities on Thursday have also been cancelled.

He said: "She is absolutely distraught at the news.

"Along with her classmates, they have been practising their songs for weeks for their big day in Bishopbriggs town centre.

"She was so chuffed at being picked to sing, and now has been left deflated that it has been cancelled.

"I was really looking forward to going along with her mum and grandparents to watch her sing.

"I’m sad that the teachers who were going to assist in this memorable event are unable to go along now due to the strike action.

"I just hope a new date can be arranged before they stop for Christmas holidays."

Ann Davie, depute chief executive of East Dunbartonshire Council, said: "As a result of the proposed strike action, it is planned that all East Dunbartonshire primary, secondary and additional support needs schools will be closed to pupils on Thursday, November 24 and extra-curricular activities will not go ahead on that day.

"All East Dunbartonshire early years centres will remain open as these are not affected by the mandate for strike action."
