A Glasgow shopping centre has welcomed the return of its festive light switch-on ceremony after a two-year hiatus.

Thousands flocked to Princes Square in the city centre on Sunday night to watch Santa Clause light up the 42ft Christmas Tree.

The tree is decked out with red, burgundy, and gold decorations and topped with a statement peacock.

The light switch-on heralds a season of festive activities at Princes Square including the Festival of Choirs in partnership with Quarriers, one of Scotland’s largest social care charities.

Princes Square will host choir performances daily from December 9 between 1-2pm in support of the charity.

The Buchanan Street mall welcomed a performance from Shine Theatre at the light-switch on, who will be back on December 17 for their own festive concert.

In addition, Strings in the Square will run weekly on Wednesdays from 2-4pm with a solo violinist in the courtyard until December 21.

These events are free to attend and there is no booking required.

Katie Moody, centre director of Princes Square, said: "We're thrilled to be able to welcome guests to our switch-on event, after a two-year absence.

“We had Santa here today to welcome everyone and do the official switch-on.

“Elf School is back by popular demand after it sold out last year and so is our Christmas bar.

“We've created a full Christmas music programme to ensure our guests are entertained while they shop.

“Princes Square is a unique place to be, especially over the festive season.”

Eateries in Princes Square have released festive menus and Everyman Cinema will be showing a host of Christmas family-favourite films.
