"A woman then heard someone say ‘that's him just been stabbed'.

"She approached Lewis Rooney. He was saying ‘I have been stabbed, I have been stabbed'."

The 28-year-old ended up needing emergency surgery at hospital.

He had three stab wounds - one to his stomach, another to his chest and a final one to his back.

The victim had a punctured lung and also an injury to his liver.

Ms McQuillan stated: "The injuries would have been life-threatening if there had been no medical intervention."

Douglas pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Rooney to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and to the danger of his life.

The dad's lawyer, Rhona Anderson, said: "He had got a call from the boy advising him that he had been assaulted by someone brandishing a hammer.

"In a state of panic, he made the bad and terrible decision to take a knife from his home."

Ms Anderson said Douglas, also of Hamilton, had not planned to attack anyone with the blade, but instead to "ward off" any apparent danger.

The court was told it was accepted he did not see Mr Rooney with a hammer.

Lord Armstrong continued bail and deferred sentencing until January 18 in Edinburgh.
