A popular Glasgow butcher shop has opened a new store inside The Forge Shopping Centre.

On Monday, Charlie's Butchers moved into a new space inside the popular East End shopping mall after being closed for two weeks.

The closure came after the 26-year-old business was unexpectedly shut down earlier this month after the company operating the Market Village reportedly fell into liquidation.

Around 34 others businesses were also forced to close.

Glasgow Times:

Paul Currie, owner of Charlie's Butchers, said he was “shocked” when he was told the news.

He said: “I was absolutely gutted. I’ve been there for 26 years and have a very successful business, and now I’ve got no business.

“I’m devastated."

However, after a five-day move-in spree, the shop is now "twice as busy" as it was in the Market Village.

Glasgow Times:

Paul said: "I'm ecstatic about the move. It feels amazing.

"The Forge Shopping Centre has tried to get us out into the actual mall a few times, but I was getting older, I was thinking of retiring rather than starting new, but the closure forced my hand a little bit.

"There's more success now that we have moved out to the mall, especially because of the stigma attached to shopping in the markets.

"We're even more excited moving forward with the business now."

Paul added that the new move has given himself and his staff more faith than ever before.

Glasgow Times:

The move has also restored the spirits of those who regularly shop in the store.

Paul said: "We received hundreds upon hundreds of messages on Facebook when we closed.

"To us, it was just our job. We didn't realise that we were so appreciated and valued in the community.

"You don't realise how missed you are until you're not there."

Glasgow Times:

The store, known for having "the best steak pie in the world", will be making use of its new building by putting in a delicatessen in the New Year.

They will also be offering a selection of "great" meats, as well as fresh, home-cooked ready meals.

Paul has said that the new store has given him and his staff "a new lease of life" and believes it will only add to their success going forward.
