Police have issued a major update after an incident forced the closure of Glasgow Airport's security and check-in area.

We earlier reported that emergency services were called to the airport at around 6am after the alarm was raised about a suspicious item in a passenger's bag.

Passengers were evacuated from the main terminal and had to wait in the multi-storey car park while the bomb squad attended.

Now cops have stood down and confirmed that the item posed no risk after it was analysed by the Royal Navy bomb disposal team.

The airport is now being reopened. 

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.55 am on Monday, December 5, 2022, police were called to a report of a suspicious item within the security search hall of Glasgow Airport.

“As a precautionary measure, and in accordance with procedures, the check-in and security search hall areas were closed to the public and a cordon implemented.

“Following examination of the item by the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) it was confirmed that it posed no risk to the public and was innocent in nature.

“All areas of the airport are in the process of being re-opened.”

Airport bosses have confirmed that police have stood down from the situation.
