Three Toryglen kids achieved what will reportedly 'never be done again' at an Irish boxing championship.

Zain Iqbal, 13, Ava Allison, 13, and Michael Campbell, 11, of Southside Boxing Academy, competed in the Wexford Box Cup last month.

The trio each brought home gold from the prestigious amateur boxing event.

Anthony Quayle, coach at Southside Boxing Academy, highlighted that because the kids live only streets apart from each other, this success would "never happen again with a Scottish away team".

He added: "Not ever, and I'm not just being big-headed.

"We never saw this happen, I even said that at the event.

"It's fantastic what we did, it's going to create a legacy."

Each boxer was hand-picked for the competition, as they are Scottish champions.

The tournament was open-class, and competitors ranged from 10-years-old, right up to adult.

Anthony and daughter Antonia travelled with the youngsters for the tournament, with the coaches and family friends sorting out the costs of the trip. 

At the competition, Zain competed in the 44.5kg category, Ava in the 51kg and Michael in the 36kg.

After beating Welsh and Irish champions, the youngsters each found themselves in the final of the competition.

Anthony went on to talk about each kid's winning moments.

He said: "Zain completely stepped on his opponent and stopped him completely and within her first three punches, Ava knew she could beat the girl she was boxing."

Ava's dad and assistant coach at Southside Boxing Academy, Bryan Allison, added: "The girl Ava boxed was supposed to win the belt that day, she's a European bronze medallist.

"But Anton said to her 'do it for your dad' and after that Ava absolutely ran through her and won the belt.

"She's just incredible, she has incredible talent. This is her life; she loves it and she loves to win.

"Here at Southside Boxing Academy, we make champions inside and outside of the ring."

Anton went on to talk about the triumph of Michael's success at the tournament.

He said: "The boy Michael fought had won his last 20 games and had never lost but Michael completely set the tone and came out victorious.

"The fact a wee guy from Toryglen could batter this champion boxer is just madness."

Out of the 400 competitors, Ava won the best girl of the entire competition, whilst Zain won best boy.

Anton said: "I had a wee tear in my eye watching them all up there."

While Bryan added that he is "extremely proud of them".

The youngsters have been boxing with the Southside club for many years.

Zain started with the club at about six-years-old and has been at the club "for most of his life".

Whilst Ava has been at the club for five years, and Michael for about three.

Anthony said since starting, the three have only improved.

He said: "They are constantly getting better, and they will continuously do so.

"Other kids from the club will look up to them and already are."

Going forward, the three continue to have their eyes on the prize.

They will be hitting competitions around the globe in the New Year including the William Wallace Cup and a boxing competition in Monksville.

On what's to come, Anthony said: "I'm so chuffed about the victories, but now it's a slap back to reality.

"Back to training and back to what's next."

Alongside the Wexford Boxing Cup, the club entered six other competitors at the Scottish Development Championships at the Ravenscraig Sports Facility and four boxers won gold.

Alongside the many golds won across the weekend, Anthony stated that the academy won 16 out of the 18 fights they were signed up for.
