A much-loved Glasgow priest has died at the age of 97.

Canon Pat Kelly was Parish Priest of Holy Name in Mansewood in the city's Southside for nearly 23 years, from 1978 to 2002.

Born in Ireland in 1925, Canon Pat was ordained in June 1951 and his last role was in 2004 as Emeritus Canon.

The Archdiocese of Glasgow announced today that Canon Pat had passed away at St Joseph’s Care Home, run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, in Robroyston.

They said: "Like many young Irish priests at the time he was happy to spend his years of ministry away from his native shores and came immediately to Glasgow where he lived and worked for the rest of his life."

He has worked at St Nichola's, St Martin's, St Joseph's in Milngavie and Tollcross, St Mary Immaculate and St Gilda's.

Dozens of tributes were paid following the announcement, with one parishioner commenting that Canon Pat was a "much-loved" priest of their families and they had "so many special memories".

Another said: "A wonderful man, priest and dear friend. Father Kelly married us and baptised our children. We will miss him so much. May he rest in peace."

A third added: "Rest in peace, a lovely priest who always had a friendly word for everyone."

The Reception of Remains and Vigil will take place at Holy Name, Mansewood, on Wednesday, December 14 at 6.30 pm.

The Funeral Mass will follow at the same place on Thursday, December 15 at 12.30pm, and then Canon Pat’s remains will be taken to Desertmartin, County Derry, for burial.
