A Govan charity is "absolutely delighted" after winning a prestigious award.

Men's Shed Govan was formed in 2017 to provide a place for retired, unemployed or unfit-for-work men to have a focus and purpose again.

Now, the charity has won the Scottish Men's Shed of the Year Award.

Glasgow Times:

Organised by the Scottish Men's Sheds Association (SMSA), the award recognises men's sheds across Scotland that are making a contribution or positive impact to people's lives and the community.

Winners were decided via a public vote. Voting opened at the start of October and closed on Sunday, October 30.

Sarah Everett, 54, funding manager of Men’s Shed Govan, said herself and the guys are "thrilled to bits" with the news.

She said: "We are absolutely delighted and just so pleased.

"The guys are over the moon."

"There are sheds that have been around a lot longer than us, so I think we've done really well for being so young.

"We've worked so hard and done a lot of things this year within the community and it's just so great that it's being recognised."

Over the last year, the men's shed installed defibrillators outside their base, turned an old nursery site into a community garden, and starting a ladies social club as part of the men's shed initiative.

The charity group were one of three finalists for the award, alongside Inverurie & District Men’s Shed and Lanark Men’s Shed.

As the winners of the award, Men's Shed Govan received a trophy that they will get to keep for a year, as well vouchers and goodies.

They received a £150 voucher from Axminster Tools, a £400 cabinet tool kit from Cromwell, a free machine competency and woodwork training day from David Young Training, and a £250 voucher from Scotmid Co-operative.

The group also got a £500 cash prize from the SMSA and goodies from Scottish shortbread-maker, Dean’s of Huntly.

Sarah said: "We would like to thank everyone who voted for us, we really appreciate their support."

The group plan to use some of the money for more art classes and day trips as "the guys love days out".

Men’s Shed Govan is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am until 2pm.
