A young Glasgow boxer will take on a sponsored bungee jump this weekend, dressed in his rival football team’s strip to raise as much money as possible in memory of a beloved family member.
On Saturday, Kobi Connolly, 15, will plunge a huge 160ft from a platform on the banks of the River Clyde in remembrance of his great-aunt Isobel who died in 2016, aged 48, following a two-year battle with motor neurone disease (MND).
The Springboig teenager shared a close relationship with Isobel who worked as a classroom assistant at Carmyle Primary School and would collect him from nursery every day in his younger years.
These days, Kobi is an avid boxer and promising athlete who trains regularly with coaches Gary Porter and Barry Murphy at the Glasgow Boxing Academy in Govan.
Having learned of his upcoming bungee challenge, coach Barry saw an opportunity for mischief and offered to double his donation if Kobi, a season ticket-holder at Ibrox, completed the jump in a Celtic top.
Determined to do his best to support a cause close to his heart, Kobi accepted the deal without hesitation and has now secured a special Hoops strip with his aunt Isobel’s name on the back for the occasion.
Ahead of the event, he said: “I’ve seen how this disease affects everyone with it and their families and I wanted to do the bungee jump to help raise money to support them.
“My boxing coach has challenged me as a big Rangers fan to do the jump in a Celtic top by saying he would double his donation.
“So, only because it’s for a good cause, I accepted that challenge and it’s managed to raise more money for the charity.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far and anyone that can donate, please do, means a lot to me and my family.”
