OVO Bikes Glasgow have announced a new charity initiative to support The Trussell Trust.
The winter OVO bikes campaign will provide Glasgow with 25 festive-designed bikes to help the trust with their ending UK hunger mission.
During every 20-minute cylce, £1 will be donated to the charity.
James Watts, head of PR, social and sponsorship for OVO Energy, said: “We’re so pleased to continue our support for the Trussell Trust this winter, with a real focus on helping people who face specific hardships.
"Our special edition Winter OVO Bikes will be available across both Glasgow and Cardiff throughout the festive period, with each ride having the added benefit of raising funds for UK foodbanks, as well as helping communities across both cities continue their journey towards zero carbon living."
OVO bike users can find the special edition bikes around the city, as well as at Christmas markets and other festive events.
The campaign is running through the month of December.
Emma Revie, chief executive at the Trussell Trust, said: “We are very grateful to OVO Energy and nextbike for their incredible support.
"This winter, more people are likely to need a food bank’s help and food banks across our network face providing more than 7,000 food parcels to people in crisis every day throughout December. But ultimately, no one in the UK should need a food bank – all of us should have enough money for the essentials like food, clothing and heating.
"The support of cyclists in Glasgow using this initiative will help food banks within our network continue to provide the lifeline of emergency support for local people in crisis, while we work in the long term to end the need for food banks, for good.
"Thank you so much.”
Donations will be made via nextbike, a company that operates public bike-sharing systems and powers OVO bikes.
Leigh Richards, Business Development and Partnerships Manager, nextbike by TIER, stated: “The Trussell Trust’s mission to end hunger in the UK is one that we are incredibly pleased to be able to support through our Winter OVO Bikes initiative.
"As an added benefit we hope the special festive livery that we have applied to the bikes brings a touch of Christmas joy to the streets of Cardiff and Glasgow. Keep an eye out for the bikes at any Christmas markets you go to!”
Councillor Angus Millar, Glasgow City Council Convener for Climate and Transport added: “Given Glasgow’s investment in cycle infrastructure and the amazing success of initiatives like the cycle hire scheme, it’s never been easier to get about our city by bike.
“Cycling is not only an attractive, convenient way to get around Glasgow, travelling by bike for everyday journeys can help improve our physical and mental wellbeing as well as help contribute toward achieving our sustainability goals.
"Winter OVO Bikes are a fantastic way to combine cycling around our city during the festive period whilst also supporting nextbike’s charitable initiative.”
