School pupils across the city have rolled up their sleeves to get involved with the Glasgow Times Bank on Us appeal this week, collecting vital donations for those in need this Christmas.

For the fourth consecutive year, we are encouraging our readers to get involved with a festive food drive and have partnered with dozens of food banks across Glasgow and beyond to ensure no one goes hungry this holiday season.

Youngsters at Westerton Primary school in Bearsden were amongst the first to collect hundreds of items including selection boxes, and cupboard essentials which they carefully sorted and organised with the help of parents and teachers.

Glasgow Times:

Today, the selfless schoolkids took the time out from rehearsing for their annual winter concert to help place an incredible collection of bags, which will soon be whisked off to a local charity, under a sparkling Christmas tree.

Pauline Cumming, who works at the school and is chair of the PTA, said: “We always have a Christmas disco and this year instead of charging to get in we decided that we would ask for food bank donations instead.

“We’ve collected foodbank donations before, but when we heard about the Glasgow Times Bank on Us appeal we thought it would be a great idea to get involved.

“All of the kids came to the disco last night ready with their donations.

“Everyone at the school has been really generous.”

11-year-old Sophie and her friends took a break from dancing to pack some of the bags last night and said it was “hard work” but that they were “excited” to see the bags ready to make their way to those in need this Christmas.

Over the next week, the Glasgow Times will visit schools across the city to meet with other children who have done their bit to help with the Bank on Us appeal.

On Wednesday, November 30, identical donation bags were inserted into every copy of the Glasgow Times as this year’s campaign was launched.

Readers who are able to donate are asked to fill the bags and hand them into one of our partner food banks.
