A family-run Glasgow café is hosting a free Boxing Day meal to bring together members of their community in need.

Wee Betty's, located in The Lochs Shopping Centre in Easterhouse, will welcome any members of their community that want to take part.

The cafe, which is owned by four sisters, hosted the first Boxing Day community meal last year with the Easterhouse Community Church.

This year, the owners of Wee Betty's hope to make their festive supper a bigger event by offering attendees a three-course meal with a hot or cold drink as well as handing out a donated present.

In addition, a team of volunteers have offered to pick up and drop off anyone that wants to come but might be unable to do so for transport reasons.

Sammy Quinn, one of the co-owners of Wee Betty's, hopes to encourage any housing-insecure or elderly people in the area to come as well as anyone who might feel lonely this time of year.

She said: "We just want to give the Christmas spirit that maybe some people don’t get the day before.

“We reach out to anyone in need. Not just homeless people, but elderly people that don’t have a family.

“Quite a few older gentlemen have come in which has been great this year because generally, they can be quite self-conscious to do something like that.

“Anybody is welcome on the day, even if you just want to pop in."

Sammy added: “We have a good amount of volunteers who are willing to pick people up and drop them off back home so that if the weather is bad we can still get them.”

The ability to offer people a lift to and from the meal is an exciting addition this year and means more people can attend that might live further away from the shopping centre.

Sammy said: "We are very community-based and we treat most of our customers like they're family, we’re always checking in on them.

"For us to do this it means that we’re able to reach out to people that are maybe a wee bit further away and make more people feel like they can come and join our 'Chatter Natter' table and meet new people.

“It’s a good way to meet new people as well actually.”

Glasgow Times:

Robert McGregor, the owner of B&G hair and beauty salon, will be hosting karaoke for the attendees.

The shopping centre is closed but they will have back door access to the centre.

Hosting the Boxing Day meal is very important to the owners of Wee Betty's and a vital part of what Christmas is about, charity and helping other people.

Sammy said: “It is a nice feeling.”

The event will start at 12pm on Monday, December 26.
