Strikes took over the country in 2022 with many workers demanding higher pay amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Disruption continued over the festive period as rail and Royal Mail strikes continued.

Some disputes were resolved with union leaders while others are expected to continue into next year.

In January 2022, members of Unite, Unison, and GMB unions that work for Glasgow City Council gathered in George Square over claims that payment settlements were being delayed for women that were awarded them in 2019.

The city council went on to reach a £770 million equal pay agreement, funded by 'selling and leasing back' a range of buildings including the City Chambers and Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

Staff were also engaged in action short of a strike (ASOS) which involves working strictly to contract, not covering for absent colleagues, not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action, or undertaking any voluntary activities.

Network Rail staff launched their first strike action in June over pay, causing significant travel disruption. 

The dispute is ongoing.

Supporters gathered in Glasgow city centre in June to show solidarity with the strikes, including representatives of GMB, Unite, EIS, EIS-FELA, CWU, Unison and the Glasgow Trades Council.

A new pay offer halted the second round of strikes after it was agreed on by union leaders.

Members of the RMT union took to Glasgow Central and Queen Street stations in October, with the scheduled strike causing disruption across ScotRail services.

Members were striking over pay and conditions.

The strike is separate from the Network Rail strikes.
