A series of refurbishment works is set to close the Glasgow Subway system on select days.

SPT announced a series of one-day closures to aid the continued rollout of the Subway Modernisation works.

It will allow contractors to install cabling and equipment within the Subway tunnels.

The planned closure will take place on Sundays over the upcoming weeks starting mid-January.

What dates will the Subway be closed?

  • January 15
  • January 22
  • February 12
  • February 26
  • March 12
  • March 19
  • March 26

Another Sunday closure is expected after Easter but the date has not been agreed upon yet.

Subway bosses claim the closures will provide the Subway Joint Venture (JV) extra time to install the new signalling and communication systems for new trains.

The works involve laying cables between stations and mounting them onto brackets within the tunnels.

The closures will also give contractors the opportunity to carry out the initial civil works required to strengthen station platforms and enable the future installation of platform screen doors.

Antony Smith, director of the Subway said: “These single Sunday closures are equivalent to several regular nightshifts and means the programme will significantly progress the new signalling installation and accelerate our overall plan.  By extending the time the team has to work on this installation, it will be completed more efficiently and, importantly, safely.”
