Co-accused Laura Graham, 33, had also made efforts to take the ruck sack.
McLeod pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assault and attempted robbery.
Pregnant Graham admitted attempting to rob Mr Clark.
The court heard that the pair approached Mr Clark who was standing at a bus stop.
Prosecutor Katie Bell said: "McLeod asked him for a cigarette and alcohol but he refused to give him anything.
"Both men faced up to each other and McLeod grabbed Mr Clark by his jacket and rucksack then struggled with him.
"This caused Mr Clark to fall to the ground."
An employee at a nearby bakery shouted for McLeod to stop but the attacker claimed that Mr Clark had a knife.
The employee stated that she did not see Mr Clark with a blade.
Graham meantime repeatedly grabbed Mr Clark's rucksack but he held on to it.
The victim then put the bag in between his legs.
Miss Bell: "McLeod returned to the victim and put his foot on him then attempted to grab the bag."
McLeod and Graham then fled the scene before police arrived.
McLeod was traced and asked why "the lassie was not getting done with anything."
He then gave Graham's name and address to officers before she was then traced.

Isla Sinclair, defending McLeod, told the court that he has little recollection of the incident.
She added: "He is utterly disgusted with himself."
Sentence was deferred until next month for Graham by Sheriff David Taylor.
