A blaze broke out near a shop on a busy road which sparked a 999 response. 

Plumes of smoke could be seen at Main Street in Cambuslang on Tuesday morning while firefighters and appliances worked to extinguish the fire.

A witness alerted the emergency services when they noticed the smoke and smell. 

Glasgow Times:

They told the Glasgow Times: "I was out walking my dog just after 9 this morning when I noticed a large volume of smoke coming from behind the William Hill on the Main Street.

"I couldn't see exactly where the fire was coming from."

The witness then called the fire brigade which arrived soon after.

Glasgow Times:

They added: "Towards the end of the incident the main street was blanketed in smoke, and there was (and still is) a horrible acrid smell.

"I'm not sure what specifically was on fire. There were a few builders standing around the back, so either something they were doing caught fire or they were burning waste from the building."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they had been called to the area after rubbish caught fire.

Glasgow Times:

They have since left the scene.

A spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 9.27am on Tuesday, February 21 to reports of rubbish on fire behind a commercial premises on Main Street, Cambuslang.

"Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the area where crews extinguished the fire and made the area safe before leaving the scene at 9.53am.

"There were no casualties."
