A Glasgow resident has hit out after spotting the windows of an iconic city building boarded up.

Sean Baillie, who works for the GMB union, shared a photo of the Mitchell Library which appeared to show some of its windows patched up with cardboard.

He called it a sign of a 'decaying' city in a social media post.

He wrote: "Glasgow City Council voted to reduce the opening hours of the Mitchell Library reducing costs.

"Today I noticed windows on the library boarded up with cardboard a sad indictment of a decaying city.

"Trade Unions are meeting this week to discuss how we campaign for the city’s future."

Over 72,000 people have seen the image, with some sharing their thoughts online.

One person called the sight "absolutely horrifying", while another said: "what a sad sight far too many of our lovely buildings left to rot."

It comes after we reported that the council has made a move to cut the library's opening hours by six hours a week in a bid to plug a £50m spending gap.

Other decisions outlined in the city's budget last week include a cut in swimming pool opening hours, not re-opening the health suites in Glasgow Club venues that stayed shut after the pandemic, and charging at peak hours for outdoor tennis courts.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Life said: “The broken window panes at the Mitchell Library are due to be replaced soon.”
