The court heard that the police were chasing Mr Parker.
Johnstone meantime was behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Astra when he was "travelling too fast through a junction."
Prosecutor Jessica McGowan also told jurors in her speech that Johnstone was involved "in a police pursuit of a man [Mr Parker] running with a machete."
The fiscal depute put to the jury that Johnstone was thinking "he was getting away" at the time.
She added: "He was over the give way line, he knew there was someone running alongside."
The trial was told that Mr Parker was in and out of consciousness after the collision and not always responsive.
Johnstone was meantime arrested and quizzed by the officers.
Miss McGowan stated: "[Johnstone] was assisting the police he says - after running the man down."
The fiscal depute added that Johnstone "did nothing for 10 days" after the collision until his car was seized by the police.
George Gebbie, defending, told the sentencing that the incident took place near where his mum resides.
The advocate said: "This wasn't someone running about looking to be a hero with his mother's car."

Sheriff Paul Reid told Mr Gebbie that he was "cynical" about Johnstone saying he was helping the police.
He replied: "It was not good judgement, the Crown are not saying this was an attack - this was bad driving - and this is the context it has to be seen in."
Johnstone was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work and tagged for eight months keeping him indoors between 8pm and 7am.
Johnstone, of the city's Riddrie, was also fined £500 and disqualified from driving for 18 months.
