She ran back inside and forgot to lock the door in a state of panic.

Burnett then accused the woman of being "unfaithful."

Prosecutor Heather Naismith said: "He said she had a man at the address and he searched all the rooms before leaving."

The pair later approached each other where Burnett threw her "with force" to the pavement and attacked her.

The woman was found to have suffered extensive bruising as well as swelling to her face and eye socket.

It was revealed that Burnett has previous convictions for domestically aggravated offences.

Gary Young, defending, told the court Allan could Burnett could not accept the relationship was at an end.

The lawyer added: "He now does accept the end of the relationship and he knows he must not revisit this sort of behaviour - he said he learned his lesson."

Sheriff John McCormick said: "This is a serious matter - you have a record that does you no favours and in all the circumstances custody is the appropriate sentence."
