A West End institution has reopened its doors this evening following almost a month of extensive refurb works.
After a busy day of perfecting those all-important finishing touches, the bar at Stravaigin on Gibson Street was opened at 5pm with staff eager to welcome back customers for the first time since Monday, January, 30.
Exclusive first-look photographs shared with the Glasgow Times today show the stunning results of the team’s hard work with a mission to deliver an ‘evolution, not revolution’ of the space.
Regulars will be pleased to see that the eatery's unique charm has been preserved thanks to an ongoing collaboration with design studio Surface-ID whose association with Stravaigin stretches back to the original expansion in 1994 when the main bar was created from a neighbouring business.
Courtney Keating, interior designer at Surface-ID said: "As custodians of the original design, protecting the legendary Stravaigin appeal was at the forefront of our thinking when developing the new scheme with the client.
“It has very much been a collaborative experience with Jemma Kiddle (development manager of Metropolitan Pub Company) and the Stravaigin team.
"We haven’t changed too much, which we know will reassure regular patrons, and where upgrades have been made, these have been done sympathetically and using high-quality materials."
With a strong focus on sustainability, reclaimed materials and repurposed features are used throughout the space including lights from a Yorkshire theatre which are suspended from a ceiling that has been hand-painted by a talented local artist.
Tucked away downstairs in what feels like a well-kept secret is The Cellar wine bar which has been transformed with soft teal and stone colours, a rustic chevron terracotta tiled floor, marble tables, and decorative wine storage.
A trip to the bathroom reveals yet more subtle improvements with jade green tiles and brass accents evoking a sense of vintage glamour.

Full bar and restaurant service will resume at Stravaigin from 12pm tomorrow with plans to introduce a seasonal cocktail menu within the coming weeks.
Those who have been missing cosy weekend meals at the spot can look forward to new creations from head chef Jambo who has passionately developed a menu of springtime dishes which stay true to the bar and restaurant's ethos of serving world cuisine with the best of local ingredients.
Michael Horan, managing director of Metropolitan Pub Company said: “We are delighted to be opening the doors again to Stravaigin after being closed for almost a month and excited to share the refurbishment with our patrons who we hope will love the new design evolution.
“Stravaigin holds a special place at the heart of the community and the design touchpoints we have invested in will enhance its appeal whilst ensuring its independent spirit remains. The venue’s autonomy and strong local connection, along with continuing to offer delicious and memorable food and drink experiences, are the greatest strengths of Stravaigin.
“Head Chef Jambo and his team have pulled out the stops and created a new menu brimming with springtime seasonality and best of Scottish produce, while General Manager Olivia and Marquis – who have helped to run Stravaigin for 19 years - are ready to extend a warm Stravaigin welcome to everyone along with their team.”
