HUMZA Yousaf’s victory in the SNP leadership contest does not automatically guarantee that he becomes the First Minister.
It means he takes over from Nicola Sturgeon as party leader and when she resigns as First Minister in Holyrood, he will be the SNP candidate to succeed her.
There will be a vote in Holyrood on Tuesday where parties can nominate their own choice for First Minister.
Earlier today it was announced Humza Yousaf had won the SNP contest
However, with the most MSPs in Parliament, the SNP choice would almost certainly be guaranteed to be elected.
If the other parties put forward a candidate there will be a vote among the 129 MSPs.
If there are two candidates then the one with the most votes is elected.
Should the Conservatives and Labour nominate their leaders, Douglas Ross and Anas Sarwar, then a vote will decide.
The Greens, who are in government with the SNP, have confirmed they will vote for Yousaf and continue with the Bute House Agreement which means he should have a majority of MSPs supporting him.
In that event, Yousaf will become the First Minister of Scotland tomorrow and will then appoint a new Scottish Cabinet, probably later in the week.
