Work is now underway to build more than 50 new council homes in the Airdrie area as part of an ‘ambitious’ plan to deliver 5000 new properties in North Lanarkshire by 2035.

Sod cuttings have today signalled the start of a project that will see 16 new homes built at Glenacre Drive and 40 others at Petersburn Road, on the site of a former primary school.

Leading proceedings at this morning's ceremony was housing convener and councillor Heather Brannan-McVey who was joined by a number of local councillors and project partners.

She said: “Today marks the start of two more new council housing projects as we continue to build on the excellent progress we’re making in providing new, modern and affordable homes to communities across North Lanarkshire.

“We have several exciting housing projects underway across the Airdrie area, including within the town centre, helping us transform the local community, improving the lives of local people and delivering economic opportunities.

“We’re delivering first-class homes that will meet the needs of our residents now and for generations to come.”

The two new developments will offer a range of houses, bungalows and cottage flats with a drive to prioritise wheelchair accessibility at many of the properties.

Gary Climson, chairman of McTaggart Construction, said: “We are delighted to be delivering these projects on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council and playing a part in the regeneration of the local area, not only through the creation of new homes but also supporting the community by creating job opportunities, work placements and getting involved with local organisations.”
