As the final track was played for a sea of dancers illuminated by the reflections of giant disco balls, the main tent of last year’s Melting Pot x Heverlee festival felt a world away from the Southside neighbourhood that lay just beyond its walls.
The festival had been a roaring success, bringing together the best of the city’s dance music scene alongside acts from iconic clubs across the UK for a bank holiday celebration like never before.
Hoping to prove that the electric atmosphere can be recreated, festival director Mark Mackechnie spoke exclusively with the Glasgow Times ahead of this year’s Melting Pot x Heverlee Springtime Weekender which takes place on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7.
He said: “I think you’ve always got to try and make things a little better each year.
“There’s no excuse not to.
“We had originally started out doing events at the Queen’s Park Arena before deciding to relocate to the Recreation Grounds which is a great space.
“The big tent and circus-style aesthetic is something that doesn’t happen very often around here and we’re really looking forward to bringing it back.”
In an effort to make this year’s festival bigger and better than before, the team have pulled out the big guns with a diverse lineup that ranges from Disco legends Odyssey, who are known for hits like Native New Yorker and Going Back to My Roots, to up and coming local talent, Pleasure Pool.
Paired with food from Glasgow’s own Big Feed and drinks by Heverlee, it seems all the ingredients are there to create an unforgettable event in the heart of the Southside.
Mark continued: “The whole weekend is going to be a celebration of national and international talent who have come together in this really cool environment.
“We’ve got a lot of folk from the area who will be coming along to enjoy it and local businesses seem to be really excited to see it taking place again.
“It’s got a great neighbourhood vibe that brings people from all over the city.”
Although when we speak Mark on location the Queen’s Park Recreation Ground looks serene in the spring sunshine, it will soon be time to start building the two big top tents that will house this year’s acts and preparing the site for the arrival of hundreds of music lovers.
Asked what he would say to anyone who has yet to nab their tickets yet, he said simply: “It’s a bank holiday weekend and you’ve got the Monday off.
“You’re not going to see a lineup like that again in Glasgow this year and we’re bringing it right to your doorstep.
“Why not come and join the party?”
