Thousands of runners took to the streets of Glasgow this morning to take part in this year's Race for Life.

The annual charity event in aid of Cancer Research UK saw participants lace up their trainers and head to Glasgow Green for a series of sponsored 3k, 5k and 10k runs which raised almost half a million pounds in total.

This year, local mum Andrea Lambrou, who was diagnosed with skin cancer while expecting her first child, was chosen as the VIP starter to sound the horn and signal the start of the race

Colourful costumes could be seen throughout the crowds from giant M&Ms to inflatable unicorns while 14 members of the Strathaven Superhoopers "power hooped" their way through the entire 5k course.

Speaking after the event Lisa Adams, Cancer Research UK’s spokeswoman in Scotland, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life Glasgow.

“Life-saving research is being funded right now thanks to our supporters who fundraise.

"The atmosphere at Race for Life Glasgow was hugely moving - full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter as people celebrated the lives of those dear to them who have survived cancer and remembered loved ones lost to the disease."
